Authenticity That Goes Beyond Skin Deep
We go through our entire lives being told by our parents, our teachers our closest friends and our spouses just how unique and special we are, but as the world continues to become even more tied to the web and we continue to barrel headlong into a rapidly expanding, constantly connected future, we’re going to need more than just the endorsements of friends and loved ones to make others believe that too.
The social media environment promises to provide proof to the theory that “brand you” is ulitmately interconnected in a myriad of ways. If you are given the opportunity to connect with the world in a thousand small ways, none of them, on their own, will reveal who you are but collectively, each of them contribute to the articulation of a wider picture of you which is probably a LOT more accurate than you may think.
This is where most people disconnect, not realizing that this 10K foot view of their personal social “brand” provides a far more wide reaching view into who they are.
To prove this point, see My Social Strand, a Facebook online app that takes your Facebook profile (plus some data you generate about yourself) and creates an infographic of your character and your online connections. The app was launched on Facebook in early March and was spearheaded by Be The Match, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a national Bone Marrow Donor Program in the United States. Its name comes from a play on words between DNA strand and Social Media to suggest that your social media profile is as unique as your DNA.
Aside from the fact that this is social media “do-goodery” at its very best, its also a great example of social awareness of a cause leading to greater social engagement which then leads to action; all of these things, by the way, are connected to YOU as part of the catalyst. A truly cool idea. The ability of social media to create an environment that is transparent and which creates instant accountability, creates a ready-made social conscience at zero cost is astounding. As far as that goes in the transformative process of our world, business and otherwise, social media has only just began.
